Description

Jalapeno Orange (C. annuum) is a straightforward jalapeño that happens to ripen orange, and the colour is not a passing stage — orange is where it finishes. Left on the plant it holds that warm glow instead of going red.

The pods are the classic conical jalapeño shape at 7–9 cm, and the flavour is the reason to pick this one over a red: it comes out sweeter, juicier and fruitier, with the heat kept firmly mild at around 5,000 SHU. That makes it a jalapeño you can use generously, and one that brings colour to a salsa that would otherwise be all red and green.

Worth not confusing with NuMex Orange Spice, which is also an orange jalapeño but a very different pepper — that one was bred at New Mexico State University and measures close to 80,000 SHU. We stock both; this is the mild one.

The plant is compact and productive at around 60 cm in a container and larger in the ground, ripening in about 75 days from transplant. It does well on a balcony.

Salsa, pickling, stuffing and fresh use — anywhere the colour does some work.
