Description

Mattapeño is a variegated jalapeño found by Matt O., who spotted a single odd seedling with white leaves among a commercial greenhouse grow. He saved its seeds and shared them with other growers, and the line has been worked on ever since.

The foliage alone makes it worth growing: leaves splashed and striped with white, sometimes almost entirely white shoots. The young pods match, creamy white with green stripes. As they ripen they move from white and green, sometimes through a peach stage, to deep red, often with fine corking lines.

Heat is mild with a hint of sweetness, true to its jalapeño roots, so the pods suit salsas, fresh snacking and pickling. The plant is compact and prolific, at home in a container as well as a garden bed. The amount of white varies from plant to plant.
