Thai Orange Hot

Description

Thai Orange Hot (C. annuum) is a Thai cayenne type that breaks the usual rule: instead of ripening red, it finishes a clear bright orange. That is uncommon in this group and it is the whole point of the variety — a familiar Thai pod shape in an unfamiliar colour.

The pods are slender and tapering, around 5 cm long and well under a centimetre wide, held upright above the foliage. The walls are very thin, which has a practical consequence worth knowing: they air-dry quickly and completely, so you can make flakes and powder in a warm room without a dehydrator.

The heat is the classic Thai bird-chili level — direct, sharp and not for the cautious. No laboratory measurement has been published for this variety and no seed source quotes one, so treat it as properly hot rather than attaching a number to it.

The plant is compact and bushy at 60–90 cm, carries white flowers and sets very heavily — growers commonly report well over a hundred pods in a season. Around 80–90 days from transplant. It does well in a container of five gallons or more.

Stir-fries, chili oil, drying to flakes, and hot sauce where a lighter colour is welcome.
