Starfire Purple

Description

Starfire Purple (C. annuum) is grown for one thing above all: a plant that carries green, deep purple, orange and red pods all at the same time. It was bred in Italy from a cross of Starfire Red and Marconi Purple, and the four-colour display is what earned it a place in the catalogue.

The pods are slim and elongated, roughly 6 cm long and 3 cm across, many of them held upright above the foliage where the colour shows best. They start green, turn a dark violet-purple, then move through yellow-orange to red — and because pods set continuously, a mature plant looks like it is wearing all four stages at once.

The heat is mild and, honestly, unpredictable. Growers report anything from a gentle warmth to pods with no perceptible bite at all, so treat it as a decorative pepper that happens to be edible rather than one you plan a sauce around. The plant is bushy and compact at around 80 cm, prolific, and well suited to a large pot, a balcony or bonchi work.

Use it fresh in salads and salsas where the colour earns its keep, pickle the purple-stage pods whole, or simply grow it where people will see it.
