Bolivian Rainbow

Description

Bolivian Rainbow is a traditional ornamental from Bolivia and still one of the easiest chili plants you can grow. It stays small and tidy, branches well and looks good from early summer right into winter on a bright windowsill.

With enough light the foliage darkens to a glossy deep purple, at times almost black, and the flowers are purple to match. The pods are small upright cones of around 2–3 cm, and they ripen through purple, cream, yellow and orange to red. Because new pods keep setting while the older ones ripen, the plant carries every colour at once, which is exactly where the name comes from.

It is not just for looks. The pods have a clean, medium heat and a crisp, fresh taste that works in salsas and stir-fries, and they dry easily for flakes. Its compact growth also takes well to bonsai training.
