Jamaican Mushroom Orange

Description

The orange form of the Jamaican squash pepper, and a genuinely eye-catching one: wide, flattened UFO-shaped pods with a broad flaring calyx, developing early and ripening to a warm orange that stands out against anything else in the greenhouse.

Like its red sibling this is a Capsicum annuum, not the chinense it is so often sold as — the squash and mushroom types are the annuum outliers among the Caribbean peppers, and they are routinely mislabelled. What it does share with its neighbours is the aroma: fruity, citrus-bright, unmistakably Caribbean in character.

The plant stays neat and bushy and still produces a surprisingly heavy crop, even in a smaller pot. A rewarding variety for anyone who wants the look and the flavour without giving up half the greenhouse.
