Purple Flash

Description

An ornamental from Ball Horticultural, introduced in 2008, and one where the foliage is the product. The leaves are near-black, splashed with bursts of bright purple, and new growth comes in flecked with creamy white — a combination it holds all season rather than losing after the first flush.

Small dark purple flowers arrive in clusters in early summer, followed by tiny round glossy jet-black fruit barely half a centimetre across, scattered through the dark leaves like beads.

The plant is a neat upright mound, roughly 35 cm tall and half a metre wide, with an unusual layered habit that makes it read as structured rather than shrubby. It is strikingly tough — genuinely drought- and heat-tolerant, and content in a container until the first frost.

The pods are technically edible and very hot indeed, but this is a plant grown to be looked at, and we would leave it at that.
