Description

Jalapeno Emerald Fire is a modern jalapeno and a 2015 All-America Selections winner. The pods are big and heavy for the type, about 8–9 cm long and 3 cm across, with thick walls and smooth, glossy skin that stays largely free of the corky cracks jalapenos often get. They are usually picked a dark emerald green, but left on the plant they darken further and then ripen to a deep red.

The heat is on the mild side for a jalapeno, which makes it an easy pepper to cook with in quantity: whole pods for poppers and the grill, thick rings for nachos and pickling, chunks for a fresh salsa. The red pods are sweeter, and they are the ones to smoke into chipotle.

The plant is compact and sturdy, staying under a metre, and sets a concentrated crop of large pods. A 10 litre pot in a sunny spot is enough. This line is not yet fully stable, so pod size, shape and heat can vary from plant to plant.
