Filius Blue

Description

One of the very few peppers that produces a genuinely blue pod. They emerge a deep indigo-violet, pass through lilac, cream and orange, and finish bright red — with every stage visible on the plant at once. Small tapered pods of about 2.5 cm, carried in quantity on a compact bush that is perfectly happy in a small pot.

There is a quirk worth knowing: this one is hottest while it is blue. The immature indigo pods carry a serious cayenne-level bite, and the heat softens noticeably as they ripen through to red — the opposite of what most peppers do. Pick according to how brave you feel.

The flavour is straightforward rather than complex, so its real value is as an ornamental with genuine culinary use behind it. Compact, tough, and outstanding as a bonchi subject.
