NuMex Easter

Description

NuMex Easter (C. annuum) is the first plant of any kind bred at New Mexico State University to win an All-America Selections award, taking the 2014 Bedding Plant title. It came out of NMSU’s Holiday ornamental series — an entire calendar of holiday-themed chilies — and was released in 2010 from a cross made back in 1991.

The pods grow in upright clusters of four to six, bullet-shaped and fasciculate, which is exactly what produces the look the variety was named for: a small dense plant that appears to be holding basketfuls of pastel eggs. They ripen pastel purple to yellow to orange, with some growers reporting a red stage if pods are left on longer.

One honest note, because you will see Scoville numbers for this variety elsewhere: NMSU never measured its heat. The breeding programme states plainly that it was developed as an ornamental and the pungency was never tested. The pods are edible but not especially flavourful — grow this one to look at.

The plant is a semi-dwarf of 15–20 cm, naturally well branched, dense and uniform, with small white flowers. It tolerates heat, drought, rain and wind, and works in containers, on a patio, as bedding or as a houseplant.
