Jalapeno, Black Magic

Description

Jalapeno Black Magic earns its name in full sun. The young pods turn such a dark green that they look almost black, and they hold that colour for weeks before ripening to a glossy red. They have the classic jalapeno shape, around 8–10 cm long with a blunt tip and thick, juicy walls.

The heat is mild, at the gentle end of the jalapeno range, and the flavour is full and fresh. Picked dark, the pods are crisp and good for poppers, nachos and pickled rings, and the near-black colour looks striking on the plate. Picked red, they are sweeter and better for roasting, sauces and smoking.

The plant is compact and productive, and it gives a good crop even in a 5–10 litre pot. The first dark pods are ready to pick roughly two months after planting out, with red ones following a few weeks later.
