Description

The name has nothing to do with Jamaica. Jamy was selected and stabilised in Italy by Dr Mario Dadomo for the Stuard experimental farm near Parma, and it was picked out with one use in mind: chili jam. A classic jar needs nothing more than ripe Jamy pods, sugar and lemon.

The pods are wedge-shaped and heavy, about 5–7 cm long and 2–3 cm wide, with smooth skin and thick, crisp, juicy walls. They ripen from pale green to a bright orange. The aroma is strongly fruity with a citrus edge, and the sweetness in the flavour brings carrot and mango to mind. The heat is a solid medium, on the hotter side for an aji, but it fades quickly.

Beyond jam, the pods are very good fresh and dry into a bright orange powder.

The plant starts out neat and compact, then grows into a bushy 120–150 cm plant that can spread a metre wide. It sets fruit from early summer until late autumn and yields heavily, but the pods take their time to colour, so sow early and give it a 20 litre pot or a bed.
