NuMex April Fools

Description

NuMex April Fools (C. annuum) belongs to New Mexico State University’s Holiday ornamental series, released in 2010 from a 1995 cross between ‘Black Prince’ and ‘NuMex Thanksgiving’. The joke is in the pod: it changes its costume.

The fruit is slim and de árbol-like, held upright above the foliage, and ripens purple to red — the Chile Pepper Institute compares the look to a jester’s cap. A plant in full set carries both colours at once against dark foliage.

As with the rest of the Holiday series, NMSU never measured the heat and says so openly; the pods are edible but were never selected for flavour. Any Scoville figure you see quoted for this variety was invented by somebody downstream. Grow it for the display.

The plant is a semi-dwarf, compact enough for containers, pots, hanging baskets and small gardens, and takes around 90 days to colour up. The series takes roughly a decade from first cross to release, which is worth remembering when you look at how modest the plant is — a lot of patience went into it.
