Description

The jalapeño that other jalapeños get measured against. Jalapeno M is the open-pollinated commercial standard — the type behind the pods you find in the shop, and the benchmark later releases were formally compared to when they were registered.

Pods run about 8–9 cm long and 3 cm across, conical with a blunt end, thick-walled and firm, ripening deep green to red. The heat is proper medium, and the aroma is pure jalapeño: green and bright picked early, sweeter and a touch hotter if you leave it on the plant to redden. Some pods develop the pale corking lines as they mature — that is the pod showing its age, not a fault.

Sturdy upright plants of 60–75 cm carry a heavy crop without needing staking, and they finish quickly, in around 73 days from transplant. Everything you want a jalapeño for: pickling, nachos, pizza, poppers, salsa — and red-ripe pods smoked into chipotle.
