Biquinho, Yellow

Description

Brazil’s biquinho — “little beak” — in its yellow form, and one of the most charming peppers you can grow. The pods are small teardrops of about 3 cm, each drawn out into the pointed beak that gives the variety its name, ripening from pale green to a glossy bright yellow.

They have almost no heat at all — just the faintest warmth — and a great deal of flavour: tangy and citrus up front, then sweet, fruity and faintly smoky. The skin is thin and the flesh is crisp, so a fresh pod pops when you bite it. They are genuinely a treat to eat straight off the plant.

The classic Brazilian use is pickling them whole in vinegar, which is exactly what those thin walls are made for and how they reach the rest of the world in jars. The plant stays very compact and buries itself in pods — as much an ornamental as a crop, and a good bonchi subject. Isolated seeds.
