Description

An Italian superhot, gnarled and pitted and finished with a scorpion tail — a pod that looks exactly as unfriendly as it is. This is the chocolate form, ripening green to a glossy dark brown, and it carries the same enormous heat as the red: reported around a million and a half Scoville, which puts it among the hottest peppers in circulation.

What lifts it above a simple heat novelty is the aroma. There is a real fruity, floral opening and a cocoa-and-smoke depth to the brown pods before the burn takes over — and it does take over, building slowly and lasting ten minutes or more.

Worth knowing before you sow: the variety is not fully stable. Pod shape varies from squat to elongated, and the occasional plant will throw off-colour fruit. Expect a sturdy bush of a metre or so and a long season — well over 110 days from transplant — with a heavy crop at the end of it. Sauces, powders, and very small quantities of either.
