Purple Peach (CGN 21500)

Description

Purple Peach is a Brazilian landrace that growers also know by its genebank number, CGN 21500. The pods are small, round and glossy — around 3 cm across — and they ripen from pale green through pink and purple into a warm peach, often with a burgundy blush left on the shoulders. A plant in fruit can carry several of those colours at once.

The reason to grow it is the aroma: richer and more fragrant than a typical habanero, floral and tropical, with a light sweetness underneath. The heat is honest but a notch below full habanero; it builds at the back of the mouth and then settles into a steady warmth. Thick, juicy walls suit the pods to eating fresh, to salsa and to sauce. It is one of my all-time favourites.

The plants are very prolific and stay in good proportion for a pot, which is why this one makes such a satisfying bonsai chili. Give it an early start and steady warmth under northern conditions, and it will keep setting. Open pollinated.
