Habanero, Large Brown

Description

A brown habanero on the large side: pods around 7 cm long and 3 cm across, wrinkled and rounded, ripening from green to a deep chocolate brown. The flavour is the reason to grow it — the fruity habanero sweetness with the darker, earthier note that brown habaneros carry, and a heat behind it that is entirely serious.

The plant is the other half of the appeal. It grows bushy to around 80–85 cm and builds an unusually thick, woody stem, which is exactly what you want if you intend to shape it: a chili bonsai is far easier when the trunk has real substance to begin with. Give it one season in a large pot and you have something to work with.

Excellent in hot sauces and salsas, and it dries to a dark, fruity powder. Count on a long season — roughly 100 days.
