Bangalore Whippet’s Tail

Description

Bangalore Whippet’s Tail (C. annuum) is an Indian chili from the Bangalore region grown for one striking feature: pods of 20–30 cm and sometimes more, long and whip-thin, tapering to a fine point. They are mostly straight with the occasional curl, and noticeably smoother than a Thunder Mountain Longhorn — a useful way to tell the two apart.

They ripen green to red, and the flavour is mild and grassy rather than fruity, which is exactly right for the way these Indian types are used: dried above all, then ground or dropped whole into hot oil at the start of a dish. The heat is a firm medium, commonly estimated in the 20,000–40,000 SHU range, with no laboratory figure published.

The plant reaches 90–100 cm and genuinely needs staking — a metre-tall plant hung with 30 cm pods will lean over without support, and that is the one piece of advice most sellers leave out. It is productive and grows equally well in a bed or a large pot, ripening in roughly 70–90 days.

Dry them whole and string them up, grind them for a mild fragrant powder, or use them fresh in curries and stir-fries.
