Description

The yellow branch of the Sugar Rush family — the baccatum line that began as an accidental cross in our own greenhouse and has since produced Peach, Cream, Stripey and the rest. Amarillo is the one that fooled everybody: the pods look more like a yellow habanero than a baccatum, thick-walled and blocky rather than the long tapered shape the species usually gives.

The flavour is where the family earns its name and this one is at the top of it — intensely fruity, sweet and juicy with a clear citrus lift, and the heat arriving well behind the taste rather than in front of it. If you want to actually enjoy a chili rather than survive it, start here.

The plant is more contained than most Sugar Rush versions and extraordinarily productive. Superb fresh, in fruity sauces, and in anything where you want aroma to do the work.

Challenge: 1 (very easy to grow)
