Description

The name means the gold of Ecuador, and a plant in full crop shows why. El Oro de Ecuador sets plump, rounded pods of about 3–4 cm with a wrinkled, lobed base that gives them a squat bell shape. They ripen from green to a warm golden yellow-orange and hang in large numbers all over the plant.

The heat is a medium heat that can vary a little from pod to pod, and it sits behind a sweet, fruity flavour with a citrus edge. The crisp pods are good eaten fresh, chopped into salsas, pickled whole, or blended into a golden sauce.

The plant grows tall, often past 1.2 m, and keeps producing through the season. Give it a 15–20 litre pot or a bed and a stake. Like other ajis it copes with a cooler summer and is an easy first chili for a new grower.
