Short Yellow Tabasco
C. annuum
Let us clear up the name first: Short Yellow Tabasco has nothing to do with the original Tabasco pepper behind the famous Louisiana sauce. It is a different species altogether, and the name probably comes from the way its small, upright pods resemble Tabasco at a glance. What it does have is a lot of charm in a very small package.
The plant stays short, bushy and densely branched, and covers itself in little blunt-tipped pods, around 2 cm long, that point straight up from the foliage. They ripen from green to a warm golden yellow-orange, so a plant in full crop looks like it has been decorated by hand. That compact habit has made it a long-time favourite with growers who keep chili bonsai or simply want a tidy plant on the windowsill.
Do not let the cute looks fool you. The pods are thin-walled and pack a sharp, properly hot bite with a bright, slightly tangy flavour. They dry quickly and grind into a lovely golden chili powder that works wherever an Asian-style hot chili is called for, and fresh ones are great in fermented sauces and salsas.
It is extremely prolific for its size and keeps producing through the season, indoors or out. A great choice when space is tight.
