Habanero, Lightning Peach

Description

Habanero, Lightning Peach sets long, slender pods that often take a gentle kink or wave as they grow, a long way from the familiar habanero lantern. They ripen from green to a clear, glossy peach, thin-walled and light in the hand, around 6–8 cm long.

The flavour is fruity and a little sweet, with the tropical aroma that habanero growers look for arriving first and the heat following after. That heat is full habanero: well up the scale, but short of the superhots. The thin flesh breaks down readily, which makes the pods a natural for hot sauces and fresh salsas, and they dry down without much fuss if you want a peach-coloured powder.

Plants stay compact and bushy and set a heavy crop through the season, so a pot or a greenhouse bed is enough. They still want the long, warm season every habanero asks for in the north: sow early, keep them bright and warm, and give the branches a little support once they load up.
