Sugar Rush, Stripey

Description

Sugar Rush Stripey (C. baccatum) is what happened when a striped mutation turned up on a Sugar Rush Peach plant and enough people thought it was worth chasing. The Sugar Rush line began in these greenhouses over a decade ago and was refined further in Wales by Chris Fowler; the striping was spotted later by a grower in the United States and stabilised from there. Accounts of the exact years differ, which is what happens when a variety passes through several pairs of hands.

The pods are 10–13 cm long, elongated, conical and often curved or frankly squiggly, and the colour is the point: a creamy peach to deep orange ground overlaid with red vertical stripes. The walls are thick and crunchy, which is unusual for a baccatum of this shape.

The flavour is intensely fruity — tropical, sweet, with citrus and stone-fruit notes — over a proper medium heat, roughly 25,000–50,000 SHU by most accounts. The heat concentrates in the placenta, so you can dial it down and keep all the fruit.

Expect a tall, vigorous plant of 1.5 m or more that needs a big pot and staking, and be patient: it ripens slower than most, so start it early. The striping breeds true, though the line is still finishing its stabilisation and the odd plant comes out plain.

Superb in hot sauce, and it dries to a striking powder.
