Sugar Rush, Rojo

Description

Our red selection out of the Sugar Rush family — the Capsicum baccatum line that began as an accidental cross in our own greenhouse and has since thrown Peach, Cream, Stripey and a good many others. Rojo takes it in the red direction: pods ripening green to red, with the thick, genuinely crunchy walls that make the Sugar Rush types so good eaten straight off the plant.

Sweetness arrives first and the heat follows — fruity, apricot-and-citrus sweetness, then a warmth that settles just above medium. The pods are sturdy enough to stuff, roast or grill, and very good in salsas and sauces where you want fruit as well as fire.

It is not yet fully stabilised, so expect variation in pod shape and size from plant to plant. That is the deal with a line still finding its feet, and half the interest. Give it a long season and a roomy pot — baccatums of this type grow tall.
