Aji Bodysnatcher
C. baccatum
Aji Bodysnatcher is a British hobby breeder’s creation with a story we like a lot. Dennis Hughes started it in 2015 by crossing Aji White Fantasy as the mother plant with Lemon Drop as the pollen parent, working through the generations with the breeding guide on fatalii.net at hand. The name came to him when the first pods appeared: long, swollen and dangling in bunches, they looked like the alien pods from the old science fiction film.
The pods ripen from green to bright yellow. They are long and slender, roughly the length of a palm, with a wrinkled, lumpy surface that twists along the pod and ends in a pointed tail. Hanging in bunches among the leaves, they really do look a little otherworldly. The flesh is juicy, and each pod carries plenty of placenta.
The flavour is pure Lemon Drop: zesty, citrusy and clean, with that unmistakable lemony zing. The heat sits a little below its pollen parent, which makes this a chili you can actually use generously. Fresh salsa is where it really shines, and the yellow colour carries straight through into a sauce.
The plants are vigorous and very productive, with branches that get properly loaded with pods, so give them a large pot or a bed and a sturdy stake. As a hobby-bred line, expect some variation in pod shape between plants.
