Pequante
C. baccatum
Small, round, and hollow almost by design — these are the little cherry-shaped peppers that turn up stuffed on antipasto boards, and growing your own is the only way to get them fresh. The pods are roughly 3 cm across, thick-skinned and juicy, ripening green through orange to a bright red, and the natural cavity means they are ready to fill without any work.
The heat is very mild — this is a pepper about flavour rather than fire. Fresh off the plant it is sweet and bright with a clear citrus edge; the deeper sweet-and-tangy character most people know comes from the brine, so a jar of your own pickles is the obvious first project. After that: stuffed with soft cheese, on a board, on pizza, in sandwiches and salads.
A South African variety, and a vigorous one. The plants grow large and crop heavily over a long season, so give them a generous pot and something to lean on. They are easy, forgiving, and one of the few chilies that everyone at the table will actually eat.
