Description

Peppapeach Stripey is one of the striped varieties that grew out of the Sugar Rush story. It surfaced in 2021, and my good friend Chris Fowler, together with hobby grower Matt Layton, had a hand in bringing it out. Where its relatives went long and squiggly, this one stayed compact, with rounded, lantern-like pods.

The colour is the reason people stop at the plant. The pods ripen from pale green to a soft peach, and the red comes in as stripes, streaks and speckles, no two pods painted quite the same way.

The heat is mild, which leaves room for the flavour: fruity and sweet, easy to enjoy straight off the plant. The plants are productive and stay at a manageable size, so they suit a big pot as well as the greenhouse.

Lovely sliced into salads and salsas, and pickled whole the stripes stay visible in the jar.
