Jalapeno, Numex Primavera
C. annuum
Released by New Mexico State University in 1998, bred by Paul Bosland and Eric Votava, and built for one purpose: a jalapeño that tastes like a jalapeño but does not burn like one.
It measures 8,594 Scoville. For context, NMSU measured Early Jalapeño at 44,354 — so this is roughly a fifth of the heat, with the traditional jalapeño flavour and aroma intact. If you like the taste but not the consequences, this is the one.
It was developed for growers and processors as much as for the garden, and the traits show: a clean dark green free of anthocyanin, easy calyx detachment, and little to no corking on the skin. Pods run about 5 cm long and 2.5 cm wide, ripening dark green to red.
The plant is genuinely compact at around 42 cm, comes in early at roughly 65 days, and yields heavily. Open-pollinated, so you can save your own seed.
