Description

Hurt Berry is a British superhot with a name that tells you exactly what to expect. It was created in the UK by Graham Lee Warburton, who started the line by crossing Carolina Reaper with Jigsaw and later brought in Trinidad Moruga Scorpion genetics as well. The result looks like a tidier, more uniform take on the Reaper and 7 Pot Primo style.

The pods are small, roughly 2–3 cm across, with a heavily wrinkled, bumpy surface and often a sharp little tail. They ripen from light green to a deep red, and the thin walls make them quick to dry. Under the brutal heat there is real flavour: fruity, sweet and full in the typical chinense way, which is why this one is worth growing for more than bragging rights.

Heat is firmly in extreme superhot territory and builds for a good while after the first bite, so use a single pod at a time in sauces, powders or a pot of chili. Gloves are a good idea when handling them.

The plant grows to around a metre and likes it warm. Start early, give it a sunny greenhouse or a bright spot indoors and a 10–15 litre pot, and let the season run long. As a fairly young line, expect some variation in pod shape between plants.

Challenge: 2 (needs an early start and a long, warm season)
