Chupetinho, Black

Description

Chupetinho Black (C. chinense) is the dark form of the Brazilian teardrop pepper, and it comes with a warning that matters: this is not a mild biquinho. The familiar red and yellow chupetinho and biquinho types sit around 500–1,000 SHU. Independent seed sources that have grown the black form put it at 50,000–80,000 SHU, and one states plainly that it out-heats both the white and the red forms. Expect habanero-style heat in a pepper shaped like a sweet one.

The pods are about 3 cm long and 1.5 cm wide, the classic little drop with a pointed tail, carried in clusters. They start deep green-black, move through purple shades and finish red, often keeping a dark cast. The flavour underneath is light and fruity with the clean chinense character intact — the heat arrives fast and directly rather than creeping.

The plant stays compact at 50–60 cm, cascading as it matures and setting very heavily, which makes it a strong container and bonchi subject as well as a productive one.

In Brazil the teardrop peppers are traditionally pickled whole in vinegar and served as a garnish or an appetiser, and the black form does that beautifully — just remember what your guests are biting into. Also good in sauces and dried.
