Chupetinho, White

Description

One of the most striking pods you can grow. Each one is a small reverse teardrop of about 2.5 cm with a little beak at the tip, emerging green and ripening to a clean pearl white — and a plant carrying hundreds of them at once is a genuine sight.

Do not let the shape fool you. This is a chupetinho, not one of the mild biquinhos it resembles: the aroma is the same lovely thing — sweet, tangy, faintly smoky, with citrus behind it — but there is real heat underneath, and it arrives properly. Crisp, juicy flesh, a great deal of fragrance, and a bite that means it.

The plants are compact and bury themselves in fruit, literally hundreds of pods in a season, which makes them as ornamental as they are useful and a fine subject for bonchi. Pickled whole is the classic treatment; they are also excellent dried, or used fresh wherever you want aroma and heat in the same small package.
