Big Black Mama
C. chinense
A chocolate superhot with a serious pedigree: bred by Troy Primeaux of Louisiana — the man behind the 7 Pot Primo, which sits in the ancestry of most of the modern record holders — from a cross of Naga Morich and 7 Pot Trinidad Douglah.
The pods are heavily bumpy and wrinkled, around 5 cm, ripening green to a deep chocolate brown that goes almost black. Reported figures put it near a million Scoville: comfortably in superhot territory, though not a record contender. What lifts it above the pack is the Douglah inheritance in the aroma — sweet, citrus, tropical fruit — which arrives a fraction of a second before the burn does, and is the last pleasant thing you will notice.
Worth knowing: the variety is not fully stable. Pod shape ranges from elongated to rounded and plant size varies, so expect some difference between seedlings. Vigorous and prolific, and it takes well to a pot indoors under a lamp. Fermented sauces, BBQ sauces and powder.
VERY limited supply.
