Description

Brown Bode belongs to the Bode family — the small, round pimenta-de-bode peppers of Brazil, named after the billy goat (bode in Portuguese). In Brazil the type is most at home in the Centre-West, especially Goiás, where it goes into almost everything: preserved in oil or vinegar, chopped into galinhada, feijoada and baião-de-dois, or eaten fresh alongside meat and rice.

The pods are tiny, round to slightly flattened, around 1–1.5 cm. What sets this one apart is the colour: as the pods ripen they take on an unusual brownish cast, rare in a family that normally finishes a clean red or yellow.

The flavour is what earns it a place in the kitchen — delicious, with the strong, distinctive aroma the Bode type is prized for — and the plants are productive, setting their small pods in quantity. The heat is proper chinense heat, hot but well short of the superhots, so a single pod is enough to lift a whole pot of beans or rice.
