7pot Brain Strain Yellow

Description

The yellow face of one of the most notorious pods in the world. Brain Strain was selected out of the Trinidad 7 Pot for one trait above all — the deeply folded, convoluted, brain-like surface — and this yellow line, developed over several seasons of reselection, carries the same texture in vivid gold. Pods run around 5–6 cm across, heavy, wrinkled and flat-bottomed, with no scorpion tail.

The heat is at the very top of the scale, comfortably in seven-figure Scoville territory, held in an unusually thick internal membrane. But the reason many growers prefer the yellow to the red is the smell: open a ripe pod and it is pineapple and tropical fruit before the burn arrives — sweet, floral, almost smoky at the edges.

Tall, vigorous plants that produce an astonishing crop for something this hot. It needs a long, warm season — around 100–110 days from transplant — so start early. Hot sauce and powder; nobody eats these fresh twice.
