Cabacinha Laranja
C. chinense
A Brazilian oddity that earns its name honestly: the pods look like miniature bottle gourds, waisted in the middle and swelling towards the base, and they hang in enough numbers to make the plant look decorated rather than merely laden. Cabacinha Laranja ripens from green to a warm peachy orange, and at roughly 4 cm long the fruit is small enough to be charming and big enough to be useful.
Cut one open and the aroma arrives before anything else — the deep, floral chinense perfume at its most inviting, with a fruitiness that carries through into the taste instead of being buried under the burn. And there is real heat here; this is no sweet pepper in costume. It lands in the range where you notice it clearly but can still taste everything around it.
In Brazil the same pepper travels under several names — cabaça, cabacinha, fidalga, even sete molhos — and turns up in sauces, in pickles, and on the plate as a garnish, where the shape does most of the work for you. The plants grow tall and keep setting fruit, so give them a warm spot and room to stretch.
