Siberian Indoor Pepper

Description

Siberian Indoor Pepper (C. annuum) has a reputation that is hard to prove and easy to test: growers keep it as a houseplant and report it fruiting through a dark northern winter on a windowsill, where most chilies simply sulk. There is no trial data behind that — it is grower lore, passed along with the seed — but it is the reason the variety has a name and a following.

The pods are small and pointed, around 4 cm long and 1 cm wide, held upright above the foliage and ripening green to red. The flavour is a sweet, fruity paprika aroma carrying a firm bite — sources rate it anywhere from a solid medium to 15,000–30,000 SHU, so expect proper heat rather than a decorative one.

The plant is bushy and compact at 50–80 cm, which is what makes the indoor reputation plausible in the first place — it stays a manageable size in a pot and sets fruit early, with ripe pods reported from around 60 days.

Good in sauces and everyday cooking, and it dries well. If you have a bright windowsill and a long Finnish winter, this is the one to try there.
