Description

Indian Chili Bullet is a cluster chili from India, and once the plant is in full crop it is a real sight. The short, stocky pods grow in bunches at the tips of the branches and point upwards, so the whole plant ends up crowned with little bouquets of chilies.

The pods are smooth, glossy and bullet-shaped, a few centimetres long with a pointed tip. They start out a dark green and ripen to a bright, shiny red, and since the clusters ripen a little unevenly you often get both colours side by side. The taste is clean with a slight sweetness, followed by a lively, sharp heat that sits well up the scale without going anywhere near the superhots.

This is exactly the kind of chili that belongs in Indian cooking: sizzled whole in hot oil for a tadka, simmered in a curry or dal, or dried and ground into a punchy red powder. The thin walls make the pods quick and easy to dry.

The plant is compact and tidy, which makes it a great choice for containers on a balcony or windowsill. It is also tougher than it looks and grows well outdoors, even in cooler climates, as long as it gets a sunny spot.
