Fluorescent Scarlet

Description

A small, colourful ornamental that earns its place on looks and still pulls its weight in the kitchen. The pods are slim and elongated, only a few centimetres long, and run through a remarkable sequence — deep violet-black while immature, then green, orange and finally bright red, with several stages showing at once.

The flowers deserve their own mention: white with purple-lilac edging, small and unusually pretty for a chili. Heat is solidly in the middle — enough to work in Asian cooking and stir-fries rather than merely decorate them.

The plant is bushy and compact enough for a modest pot, and it takes to shaping well, which makes it a good candidate for bonchi. Ripens in roughly two to two and a half months.
