Brazilian Mini Pumpkin
C. baccatum
Brazilian Mini Pumpkin sits at the semi-wild end of the baccatum group — often listed as C. baccatum, and by some sources as the praetermissum type, which is itself sometimes treated as a species of its own. Whatever label you put on it, it behaves like a wild pepper: vigorous, generous and slightly unruly.
The pods are small, squat and deeply ribbed, looking exactly like miniature pumpkins, and they ripen to red. The aroma is full and fruity in the characteristic baccatum way, and the heat is a sharp, clear medium — estimates vary widely between sources, so taste before you commit.
The yield is the real story. This is a mass-bearer: growers report hundreds and sometimes well over a thousand tiny pods on a single plant, and a well-grown specimen covered in little orange-red pumpkins is as much an ornamental as a crop. Reports on size differ — kept in a pot it stays a 50–80 cm bush, while in open ground it grows fast and large on thin branches and wants at least a 10-litre container if you are potting it.
The standout use is powder. The pods dry easily and mill into something far better than their size suggests. One practical note from the semi-wild ancestry: germination is much more reliable with bottom heat, and the plant dislikes dry indoor air, so give it a propagator and then real growing conditions.
