Brazilian Mini Pumpkin

Description

Small ribbed pods that really do look like miniature pumpkins — squat, fluted, and produced in absurd numbers on a single plant. It belongs to the semi-wild end of the baccatum group, which shows in the vigour of the bush and in how tirelessly it sets fruit.

The aroma is full and fruity in the way only baccatums manage, and the heat is real without being punishing. Fully ripe pods make a first-rate powder — that is what most growers keep it for — but they are good fresh in cooking too.

Ornamental as well as useful: a plant covered in tiny pumpkins is a talking point long before anyone tastes one.
