Description

A compact ornamental with real culinary use behind the looks, and the holder of an RHS Award of Garden Merit — not a common thing for a chili.

The plant carries small upward-pointing pods in enormous numbers, ripening from light green through yellow and orange to a deep red, with every stage showing at once. Two to three hundred fruits on a single plant is normal, and the effect is closer to a flowering display than a crop.

It grows only about 30 cm tall but spreads half a metre wide with a semi-trailing habit, so it spills over the edge of a basket or a pot rather than standing upright. Ideal for containers and patios, and it takes well to shaping as a bonchi. It also shrugs off a cool summer and keeps fruiting into autumn.

Do not be fooled by the size — the heat is well above medium, in bird’s-eye territory. Perfect for Indian and Thai cooking, fresh or dried.
