Description

Jalapeno Tiger is thought to come from a cross between a jalapeno and the variegated ornamental Purple Tiger, and to us it looks more like an ornamental chili with a jalapeno name than a classic jalapeno. The leaves are variegated in green, cream and purple, the flowers are purple, and the pods are slimmer than a standard jalapeno at around 5–8 cm. They start out striped purple and green, then pass through orange and brown tones to red, often with several colours on a single pod.

Looks are only half the story, because the taste is surprisingly good. The heat is a medium jalapeno heat with a fresh, slightly sweet flavour, so the pods go anywhere a jalapeno does: sliced fresh into salsas, pickled in rings, or halved and stuffed. Picked at the striped stage they make a jar of pickles that looks as good as it tastes.

The plant stays at a manageable 60–90 cm and crops heavily, which suits a 10 litre pot on a sunny balcony or a greenhouse shelf as well as a bed. Our few plants looked very much alike, but we cannot call the line fully stable yet, so the amount of variegation and pod striping may vary.
