Description

Aji Blacareta grows some of the largest pods of any aji. They are long and broad-shouldered with shallow creases down the sides, tapering gently to the tip, and the biggest ones get close to 20 cm. They hang heavily from the branches and ripen from green to a glossy bright red, with both colours usually on the plant at the same time.

The heat is mild, and now and then a pod has hardly any at all. That leaves plenty of room for the fresh, fruity aji flavour, and the skin is crisp and juicy, so these are pods for eating fresh: sliced into salads, laid on buttered bread, or chopped into a quick salsa. It is a good choice when you want the taste of an aji without much burn.

The plant grows tall and branching, and it keeps setting fruit well into autumn, even in a shadier corner of the greenhouse. Give it a 15–20 litre pot or a bed, and a stake for the loaded branches. Like most ajis it takes a cooler northern summer in its stride.
