Description

A thick-fleshed baccatum with small, plump, almost heart-shaped pods that ripen to a warm orange. The flesh is dense and juicy, and the flavour sits somewhere between fruit and vegetable — sweet, rounded, more substantial than most chilies of this size, with a medium heat that leaves room for it.

It invites comparison with Trepadeira Werner, which shares the thick flesh and the heat level — but Piriz carries bigger pods, ripens orange rather than red, and stays a far more manageable plant, closer to a compact 60 cm bush than Werner’s rambling frame.

That combination is the reason to grow it: it is easy in a smaller pot, it produces well even when the season is not kind, and it tastes better than it has any right to. If you could only keep a couple of varieties, this would be a serious candidate.
